My Psychology Glossary
Hi, my name is Jeanne and I am 18 years old. Since 1 year, I study Social Science at College Montmorency. I live in Laval. This glossary will be for the students like me that are interest in psychology or even for those who are in search of their fields of study. It will contain approximately 20 word that are frequently misunderstood. They will be defined, pronounce, translate and completed with an example and an image. I believe my glossary can really help students to strengthen their vocabulary about this field.

- Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
- Example: Not only will exercise aid weight loss, but regular physical activity throughout life is associated with better physical and mental health and well-being.

- noun
- A treatment that helps someone feel better, grow stronger, etc., especially after an illness.
- Example: This is important when trying to determine the source of therapy failure.

- noun
- Identifying a particular illness using a combination of signs and symptoms.
- Example: Is technology and diagnostic skills advanced enough to detect when a patient is irreversibly in PVS or when there is a chance for recovery.

- Depression is a medical illness which affects the brain which in turn affects the rest of the body.
- Example: He describes this as a very dark time and suffered from depression for which he did not receive medication.

- To care for or deal with medically or surgically.
- Example: David's error is to then treat each of these categories of healer as fairly distinct and independent of each other, as well as stating that the swnw practiced 'conventional medicine'.

- Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
- Example: Although bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, you can manage your mood swings and other symptoms by following a treatment plan.

- Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders of the nervous system.
- Example: In neurology, oxygen-15 is used to trace blood flow in the brain, and it is thought that areas of high blood concentration relate to increased brain activity.

- Example: They are six assumptions from the classicist school about intelligence (or cognitive ability, two terms that are used interchangeably in the book) and the place IQ testing takes in expressing a person's intelligence.

- Neurons (also called neurones or nerve cells) are the fundamental units of the brain and nervous system, the cells responsible for receiving sensory input from the external world, for sending motor commands to our muscles, and for transforming and relaying the electrical signals at every step in between. More than that, their interactions define who we are as people.
- Example: Their use lies in that they are modeled on real brain structures, while the activity of every neuron can be monitored while they perform an activity.

- While everyone feels anxious in response to specific events, individuals with an anxiety disorder have excessive and unrealistic feelings that interfere with their lives in their relationships, school and work performance, social activities and recreation.
- Example: These children are also at risk of internalising problems, resulting in social anxiety and low self-worth as they grow older.

- A physical or mental feature which is regarded as indicating a condition of disease, particularly such a feature that is apparent to the patient.
- Example: A person may behave in a way which the practitioner deems odd or as a symptom of mental illness and so the practitioner would diagnose a mental illness, when in fact the behaviour may be culturally normal to the patient.

- A catecholamine neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, retina, and sympathetic ganglia, acting within the brain to help regulate movement and emotion: its depletion may cause Parkinson's disease.

- A strong emotional bond that an infant forms with a caregiver (such as a mother) especially when viewed as a basis for normal emotional and social development.
